Free Forex Trend Indicator for MT4 & MT5 – 3 MA Trend Filter
Identifying the real direction of the Forex market is not always easy.
Price can move up and down repeatedly while the overall market is still following the same trend. A normal Moving Average also reacts to these smaller movements, which can make its direction change frequently.
This Forex MA Trend Indicator is designed to make those trend movements easier to see.
Instead of using a normal Moving Average directly, it uses an average over an average to create smoother MA lines. This reduces many of the smaller fluctuations and gives a cleaner view of the market’s underlying direction.

A Smoother Way to See the Trend
A normal Moving Average follows price movements and can change direction whenever the market makes a relatively small move.
For example, during an overall bullish market, temporary price drops can make a normal MA turn downward. When price rises again, the MA turns upward.
This can happen repeatedly:
Up → Down → Up → Down → Up
The market may still be following the same overall trend, but the MA keeps reacting to the smaller movements.
This indicator takes another average of the Moving Average.
In simple terms:
Price → Moving Average → Average of the Moving Average
That second averaging makes the line smoother.
Instead of reacting strongly to every small price fluctuation, the smoothed line focuses more on the larger movement of the market.
How It Helps Identify a Trend
The purpose of the indicator is not to predict every price movement.
It is to make the direction of the trend easier to recognize.
When the market is generally moving higher, the smoothed lines can continue moving upward without reacting as much to every small pullback.
When the market is generally moving lower, the lines can continue pointing downward while filtering out some of the smaller upward movements.
Most importantly, the lines do not change direction as easily as a normal MA.
A new direction in the smoothed line is therefore more noticeable because more of the short term market noise has been removed.
This makes the indicator useful as a visual trend filter when you want to concentrate on the broader direction instead of every small price movement.
Normal MA vs. This Smoothed Trend Indicator
Consider a market that is moving upward but experiencing several temporary pullbacks.
A normal MA may repeatedly turn down during those pullbacks and then turn back up when the price recovers.
The smoothed MA lines are less affected by those smaller movements.
This creates a more stable representation of the trend:
Normal MA:
More responsive → more direction changes → more short-term movement
Smoothed MA:
Less affected by small movements → smoother direction → clearer broader trend
The trade off is that a smoother line will naturally react more slowly to a completely new trend. That is intentional. The indicator is designed to reduce noise rather than react to every small price change.
Three MA Lines for Trend Confirmation
The indicator uses three smoothed MA lines together to give a broader picture of market direction.
Instead of relying on a single line, you can observe how the three lines are moving in relation to each other.
When the lines are generally pointing upward and supporting the same direction, the market has a clearer bullish trend.
When they are generally pointing downward, the market has a clearer bearish trend.
When the lines are moving sideways or changing direction frequently, the market may not have a clear trend.
This makes the three lines useful as a 3 MA trend filter for visually separating stronger directional movement from choppy market conditions.
Free Forex Trend Indicator for MT4 & MT5
This 3 MA Trend Filter is available free for both MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.
It provides a simple visual way to observe market direction using three smoothed MA lines, where each line is created using the concept of average over average.
If you normally use Moving Averages to identify trends, compare a standard MA with these smoothed lines on the same chart.
You will see the difference most clearly when the market is noisy and making frequent short term movements.
